This year marks the 15th year that Bright Lights Summer Learning Adventures has hosted a summer international program. Senshu Matsudo University Junior High, a private Japanese school located in the Tokyo area, will once again be bringing 60-70 ninth grade students to experience a wonderful week of learning and cultural exchange with American middle school students in Bright Lights classes. Senshu parents and students have opportunities all over the world available to them but this partnership with Bright Lights and the experiences they have are a favorite.
Along with an opportunity for English immersion, the Japanese students also learn about the history and agricultural industry of our land-locked state through field trips and tours. Their classes at Bright Lights expose them to unfamiliar topics and learning experiences, while the home stay experiences with their pen pals from Lux Middle School and Lincoln Southwest High School (who also has a relationship with Senshu Senior High) help to deepen the friendships that are forged.
Bright Lights international classes are open to all middle school students in the community and will be held June 20-24 at Lux Middle School. Classes offered this year include Broadway Bound, Clay Expression, Cooking American and Japanese, Extreme Dissecting, Outdoor Adventures, Physics World Z and Robotics. Each of these classes are taught by dedicated and talented teachers who provide exciting hands-on learning experiences as well as promoting interactions between American and Japanese students. As an added bonus to these experiences, the American students are invited to an afternoon of bowling hosted by the Japanese students. After a week of participation in these classes, many of the students keep in contact by email long after their experiences together end and some even make trips to visit their Japanese friends.
The Bright Lights international program provides a wonderful opportunity for both engaging learning experiences as well as a cultural exchange that you will not want your student to miss. Registration for Bright Lights classes begins April 1. We’ll hope to see you at Lux in June!
