Responsibilities & Expectations
The duties of a classroom assistant may include small group work, reading to students, making nametags and coordinating games on the playground. Some light lifting, up to 20 pounds, may also be required.
Class times are 9 am-noon or 1-4 pm for one week, Monday through Friday. A list of duties and responsibilities will be sent in the mail. Teachers and assistants should email or call each other to arrange a meeting time. Assistants are expected to attend each day, arrive 15 minutes early and stay 15 minutes after class to clean up (may be longer on the last day of class.
Assistant Orientation will be held on the summer setup day.
- Orientation is mandatory. If you cannot attend on your scheduled day, you must attend an earlier orientation for training.
- If this does not work, you must contact Barb McCallum Highstreet by email (click "Contact Us" above) or phone 420-1115 ext. 45 to make arrangements.
- Most assistants will complete the morning by working in the classrooms with their teachers. Contact your teacher early about that morning's expectations.
Assistants may be asked to help prepare the classroom on the setup day prior to the program week (usually the Friday before). The classroom teacher will make prior arrangements with the assistant. Assistants work 18 to 20 hours, which includes the classroom setup times and the required orientation.
Last year 91% of the assistants said, "I feel I better understand how to work with children because of my Bright Lights experience." Bright Lights believes working with children is a learned skill and that all skill levels can be enhanced. Therefore, a required hour and a half orientation details the program expectations, provides training in classroom discipline, and refers students to readings on consistency, positive discipline, as well as providing beginning strategies on anti-bullying. The times and dates of the scheduled orientations can be found on the Classroom Assistant Calendar.
Assistants must provide their own transportation to and from class. The main program site is located near a city bus route. To help with transportation, assistants who live near a school served by the free Bright Lights bus to the main program site are welcome to ride with students. Contact Barb McCallum Highstreet (click "Contact Us" above) for the bus schedule.
