Volunteer as a Classroom Assistant with Bright Lights for one week this summer.
Bright Lights' classroom assistants play a valuable role in the summer program; their work in the classroom helps ensure a successful week. The assistants also benefit from the experience. They gain direct exposure to the teaching career, work directly with experts in the field and have a unique opportunity to try their hand in the classroom.
Last summer, more than 269 individuals assisted in the program -- either in the classroom or in the office for half days. Bright Lights welcomes high school and college students, and other interested volunteers to apply for these positions.
In addition to the teacher, most classes utilize two classroom assistants, offering volunteers a behind-the-scenes view of classroom preparation and administration. Bright Lights encourages assistants to develop skills to look critically at a successful classroom atmosphere, understand classroom management skills, and to consider teaching as a career.
The interaction between teacher and assistant provides an opportunity to gain skills working with people, especially children. Many assistants return yearly and develop a lasting relationship with a teacher.

To apply, complete the application on-line between Febrary 15 and April 7 by selecting Eligibility and Application. It requires two references and should take about 15 minutes. Background checks must be conducted on students who are 19 or older. Applicants may specify the weeks they are available, as well as their interests (for example: history, science, technology).
