Eligibility & Application

Who Can Apply?
Bright Lights needs more than 200 classroom assistants for the summer program. High school students (completed 8th-12th grade), college students and adults are welcome to apply. College education majors are also encouraged to consider this opportunity. College students will receive a certificate of appreciation suitable for portfolios and resumes.

Bright Lights needs:

Students with focused interests and talents. In addition to assistants skilled in working with children, Bright Lights needs assistants who have specific proficiencies, such as photography or technology, or who have a high interest in specific topics, such as art, writing, or drama.

Students interested in service hours. Summer is a great time to log volunteer hours for Citizenship Issues (CI) or service hours for the Catholic schools or scouting. Students seeking CI volunteer credit must obtain pre-approval from CI teachers and should remember to bring their "contract" to be signed by the Bright Lights' instructor the last class day. To meet the required 20 hours for CI, assistants must attend the orientation, assist the teacher with classroom set up, and complete the class hours.

Students interested in the international program. Assisting with a class in the Bright Lights International program would be a good option for students who may be interested in learning more about diverse cultures or in obtaining a college degree in International Studies. Half of the students in the class will be Japanese and half American students.

Students interested in teaching. Bright Lights likes to think of the assistant job as a hands-on "teacher camp" and an opportunity to explore the education field as a career choice.

School year help for volunteer hours. Bright Lights often needs help during the school year, too. Those needing CI hours or hours for Honor Society or scouts are encouraged to contact the Bright Lights office. Please note: CI hours cannot be obtained during school hours.

How to Apply

The online application below is available February 15 with a deadline of April 7. It will take about 15 minutes to complete the form. The application requests the name and phone numbers of two references and the summer weeks the prospective assistants are available. (Applicants should be aware of vacation dates, job schedules, camps and other activities.) Applicants 19 and older by June 1, 2008, need to give Bright Lights permission to conduct a background check.

Applications should be submitted as soon as possible after February 15. This allows Bright Lights to better accommodate an applicant's choice of session(s) and time(s). Candidates with a broader date and interest range gives Bright Lights greater flexibility of placement. Candidates will be notified of their application status by early May.

For questions about this rewarding opportunity or about classroom assistant placement, please contact Barb McCallum Highstreet at 402-420-1115 Ext. 45 or to send an e-mail, click "Contact Us" above.
