The Classroom
Bright Lights provides a friendly learning environment. No examinations, few pressures, no grades. With specialized classes, students can pursue fields of interest with others who share that same curiosity and enthusiasm. The range of ages per class is generally limited to two grade levels. With a low teacher-student ratio of 1:6, students can expect plenty of attention.
The block time structure - three-hour classes or six-hour day camps - eliminates the interruptions that often disrupt the flow of the traditional classroom. Teachers are free to invite speakers, take field trips, or engage in a subject that may not fit in a conventional 50-minute class time.
Classes are generally offered in the following three categories:
- 53 percent in math/science/technology
- 23 percent in fine arts
- 24 percent in literature/social studies
Each year, Bright Lights rents a Lincoln Public School facility as the main program site where the majority of the classes are held. The community becomes the classroom in about 25 percent of the classes. Class locations, speakers and guests truly reflect the community's participation. A class may be located at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Law College or BryanLGH Hospital. The class may host a local cycling enthusiast or the Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology at UNL. With this outreach, Bright Lights works to familiarize students with the resources - both people and places - of the community in which they live. Good student behavior is essential at community sites.
The Bright Lights program is based on these Governing Values:
We believe. . .
- learning can be fun.
- motivated peer groups enhance the educational experience using common interest as a learning platform.
- kids and teachers should feel inspired, passionate, and curious about learning.
- learning can be a life-changing event.
- access should be provided regardless of economic need.
- diversity (of program and people) teaches.
- in promoting life-long learning.
- learning is enhanced in a safe environment.
- learning opportunities should be available beyond formal education.
- every child has talents and gifts.
- in creative thinking without limits.
- it takes a community to educate a child.
